Just a short drive from Atlanta, Red Top Mountain State Park has an idyllic setting on the shores of Lake Allatoona. Red Top Mountain State Park is named for this area’s rich red soil caused by high iron-ore content. Located between Acworth and Cartersville, Red Top Mountain State Park is less than 40 miles from Atlanta and only about a 40 minute drive. The 3.5 mile Sweetgum Lodge Loop Trail connects the Visitor Center parking area and the Park Office area and shares trail space with the Homestead Trail.

The trails behind the U.S. Space & Rocket Center are designed as duel purpose trails for both hikers and mountain bikers. After hiking a short trail, we spent our time looking around at the Drone Test Facility, the obstacle course at the Space Camp Leadership Challenge Course, the planes at Aviation Challenge, and the helicopter across Aviation Pond. A walk around Aviation Pond gives you a good look at the obstacle course at the Space Camp Leadership Challenge Course and the helicopter and planes at Aviation Challenge where Space Camp cadets get to train like fighter pilots. To find the parking lot for the hiking and biking trails at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, turn left off Tranquility Base toward the U.S. Space & Rocket Center RV Park.

Getting to the Sleeping Giant Trail Head Hiking the Sleeping Giant is no easy task and takes some work to both get to and climb. Hiking to the top of the Sleeping Giant is a combination of three trails, the Kabeyun Trail, Talus Lake Trail, and lastly, Top of the Giant Trail. Getting to the Sleeping Giant trail head continues north for a short 1.5 km on the Talus Lake Trail. A great way to get an early start is sleeping at Sleeping Giant.

Sweetwater Creek State Park is home to 15 miles of hiking trails, camp sites, and a set for The Hunger Games movies. The 1 mile Red (History) Trail takes you along the rapids of Sweetwater Creek to the New Manchester mill ruins.
