    Book Review: Party of Two

But when she meets a gorgeous man at a hotel bar and they spend the entire night flirting, she discovers too late that he is none other than hotshot junior senator Max Powell. Party of Two is my least favorite of all the Wedding Date books (save for Royal Holiday, which I haven’t yet read). I respect that people need time to process emotional events, but that time and space away should be communicated. I’m excited to spend my evening with an episode and enjoy myself, but when it’s over, I realize I gained very little from my time spent.

Book Review: Connect by Ilchi Lee

Now in Connect: How to Find Clarity and Expand Your Consciousness with Pineal Gland Meditation, meditation expert and New York Times bestselling author Ilchi Lee offers a simple, yet effective path to truth, and even to the answers to our mundane, everyday problems. Through Lee’s simple explanations and using his in-depth exercises, I began my journey into opening my third eye chakra, or developing my pineal gland through meditation. My nightly routine now consists of getting ready for bed, nursing Maya to sleep, turning on her white noise machine (for her and for me), and then doing my pineal gland meditation before going to sleep myself. It was easy to feel like my entire day was ruined if Maya woke up inconsolable halfway through her nap or frustrated if I couldn’t figure out the reason for her crying.

    Baby Mayo's Birth Story

Now that Baby Mayo is three months old and officially no longer a newborn, it’s time to finally share her birth story, emergency C-section and all. My and Mayo’s bags weren’t complete until the day I turned 35 weeks, a Sunday. I felt worried because the last time I came for testing, Mayo was uncooperative. I labored like that for a few hours before a doctor came in and said I was only 3 cm dilated.

    My Pregnancy Journey

Less than three months prior, my OB said she didn’t see any reason why I wouldn’t get pregnant within the first six months of trying. A healthy pregnancy and baby was ultimately what I wanted most, but I truly felt like gender disappointment would have been a thing for me. My doctor said it was likely that the physical stress of pregnancy plus my allergies on top of whatever anxiety I had over being pregnant reactivated my chickenpox virus. The good: The bursts of energy let me assist in assembling nursery furniture, organize all of Mayo’s clothes, and do a few more projects around the house.

    Chocolatey Lactation Cookie Bars

I am 100% convinced they helped establish my milk supply–the freezer on the main level of our house has been taken over by breast milk storage bags! And when Russell Stover graciously sent me a box of goodies, including their new sugar-free chocolate baking chips, a light bulb went off in my head: To be honest, scooping out cookie dough into balls didn’t seem appealing in between pumping and taking care of Mayo. And besides, my tastebuds don’t discriminate between gooey cookies and gooey cookie bars!

    Monthly Maintenance - Changing Laines

My issue with most natural toothpastes is that they don’t seem to give me that clean mouth feeling as long as the more chemical-laden toothpastes. One of my biggest pet peeves with sheet masks is when they don’t fit my face. As with most sheet masks, I didn’t notice an obvious difference in my skin. These patches hydrated my under-eyes, but I didn’t notice a difference in the brightness of my skin.

Book Review: Tranny by Laura Jane Grace

Gabel formed Against Me! and rocketed the band from its scrappy beginnings-banging on a drum kit made of pickle buckets-to a major-label powerhouse that critics have called this generation’s The Clash. ’s enigmatic founder, weaving the narrative of the band’s history, as well as Grace’s, with dozens of never-before-seen entries from the piles of journals Grace kept. Much like with the authors of Felix Ever After and All Boys Aren’t Blue, I feel so grateful to Laura Jane Grace for giving me insight into a life so different from my own. I was in disbelief during the instances when Grace described the backsplash Against Me! received periodically from former fans, who would call them sellouts and trash personal/band property in anger of the band moving forward in their careers.

    Reading Recap: 6/21-6/27

know if I’m still suffering from my hangover from The Prettiest Star, if what I read simply wasn’t for me, or if my brain is just elsewhere. Once Maya is here, I’m sure my chances to read will be few and far between, so I need to fix this reading rut ASAP! Changing Laines is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites. This memoir started off strong for me, but I kept feeling frustrated with Laura’s decisions as I continue reading.

Book Review: When Katie Met Cassidy by Camille Perri

She’s engaged to charming art curator Paul Michael, has successfully made her way up the ladder at a multinational law firm and has a hold on apartments in Soho and the West Village. On a whim, she agrees to have a drink with Cassidy Price-a self-assured, sexually promiscuous woman she meets at work. When Katie Met Cassidy is a romantic comedy that explores how, as a culture, while we may have come a long way in terms of gender equality, This novel tackles the question: Why, when it comes to female sexuality, are so few women figuring out what they want and then going out and doing it?

Book Review: The Prettiest Star by Carter Sickels

Buy here A stunning novel about the bounds of family and redemption, shines light on an overlooked part of the AIDS epidemic when men returned to their rural communities to die, by Lambda Literary Emerging Writer Award-winning author Carter Sickels. —Paul Lisicky, author of Later: My Life at the Edge of the World Small-town Appalachia doesn’t have a lot going for it, but it’s where Brian is from, where his family is, and where he’s chosen to return to die. With nothing left in New York but memories of death, Brian decides to write his mother a letter asking to come back to the place, and family, he was once so desperate to escape. Set in 1986, a year after Rock Hudson’s death shifted the public consciousness of the epidemic and brought the news of AIDS into living rooms and kitchens across America, The Prettiest Star is part Dog Years by Mark Doty and part Tell the Wolves
