Bangkok is thousands of people all wearing the same color shirt on the same day for respect to their King, it is backpackers, it is Khao San Road, it is massage parlors, it is crowds, it is traffic, it is orange robed monks, it is hot, it is humid, it gleams with golden temples, it is medical tourism, it is cheap guest houses, it is some of the best hotels in the world, it is an ever present ebb and flow of life – all day and all night long, it is service with a smile – there is really no other city like it in the world.

Travelers to Bangkok often describe time in this city with the following two words: hot, humid. That’s it. You leave for another tropical country which is hot and humid, but you find out its not really that bad until you return to Bangkok and have something to actually compare hot & humid weather to. If you are in Bangkok during December or January, you may catch a few weeks where the nights can actually cool down to 15 C or even the around 13C. This doesn’t happen every year, but we have been in Bangkok when its actually “downright pleasant” during the day and even a bit chilly at night.

There is absolutely no other city like it in the world; it is so full of life…everywhere. You cannot help but be caught up in the hustle and bustle, the crowds, congestion and food – all day and all night. This is not to be ignored but is to be experientially jumped into full throttle.

China Ranch Date Farm & Bakery – April 2021

Most likely the most northern commercial date farm in the state of California – this remote ranch is well worth making the trek out to buy delicious dates (some 1,500 trees and 20 varieties). Actor Matthew Modine’s grandmother, Vonola Modine actually planted the first date palms here in the 1920’s entirely from seed. Today the ranch is open to visitors seven days a week – selling a variety of dates, date shakes and numerous souvenirs and other edibles in the shop. Access is on a dirt road that winds its way through a canyon eventually reaching the ranch and passing some of the date palms.

Interview with Joe Sidek, father of George Town Festival

In 2010, he founded the George Town Festival – an annual event  to commemorate George Town being inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 2010 event that showcased the heritage and cultural history of George Town turned out to be a HUGE success, and Joe, the mastermind who made it all happen, was hailed as “father of George Town Festival” ever since. On the second day, I would spend a day in Penang Hill and visit the Habitat, an eco-tourism attraction tucked away in the heart of Penang Hill. The Blue Mansion, or known as Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, is a 19th-century heritage painted in indigo-blue and designed with a unique Chinese architecture.

A Tourist's Guide to Getting around Istanbul

I prefer Apple Maps if you’re walking, and Google Maps for Public Transportation. During the day, especially rush hour, public transportations as in Metro, Marmaray and Trams are faster ways to beat traffic as it has its own platform to run on. Though in the evening after traffic hour, taking a taxi can be faster in some cases, as public transport options become less the later it gets. If you do have uber, I would recommend using it (over hailing a random cab on the street) so that you can use your credit card on file, and the route cost will be estimated ahead of time.

Interview with Tobias Hägg, Photographer and Aerial Artist

As years went by and my film and photography took different turns all the time my mind was always still on the aerial perspective. From time to time when I was daydreaming, I usually thought of places and tried to see them from an aerial perspective. When I go to Lapland I don’t want to focus on any specific locations, I like the wild side of Swedish Lapland, which puts me in to a lot of tests of strength. Tobias Hägg, also known as Airpixels on social media is an accomplished photographer and aerial artist known for his powerful landscapes combined with his eye for details, patterns & simplicity.

Out of Calabria by Peter Chiarella

Author Peter Chiarella has drawn from from his family heritage creating a compelling turn-of-the-century tale wrapped around real life stories from his maternal side of the family. This is the follow up book to Peter’s previous book, told from his paternal side of the family, Calabrian Tales. Out of Calabria follows the story of how two daughters from a privileged family ultimately follow their hearts rather then a traditional arranged marriage to men of their similar social class. However, they soon discover their dreams of improving their lives financially are dashed by the harsh realities facing new immigrants who arrive with little money or skills.

Monterey Bay Aquarium – March 2021

Visitor’s to the Monterey Bay Aquarium can park in metered spots (credit cards accepted) on nearby streets – and it is generally a short walk to the cannery. Those who don’t mind parking further away can find non metered street side parking in residential neighborhoods to the west of the aquarium (about a 10-15 minute walk away). The aquarium opened in 1984 on the former site once occupied by the Hovden Cannery (was active from 1916 until 1973 when it was the last cannery in Monterey to close). The centerpiece of the aquarium is a 28 foot tall tank containing a living kelp forest (the first exhibit in the world to showcase a kelp forest).
