The Q-Wave: Happiness is a Discipline

And, if you’re reading this Q-Wave, and have followed any of my studies and teachings, you now clearly realize I’ve shifted a little bit from medicine to how to optimize your life. Maybe that’s just the phase of life that I’m currently in, with 23 years in the wonderful practice of medicine, and now I’m in a bit of a different realm. So, the pneumonic is germs, G-E-R-M-S, G-E-R-M-S. The Q-Wave: The 6 Most Important Mindsets of Urgent Care

You know what, if you say, “I’m sure this chest pain is nothing,” you’re going to be right 95 out of 100 times, but you’re going to be wrong five times out of 100 too. What the supervising docs and the primary care docs think of you is important because when something goes wrong in a chart, they’re often going to rate you based, to a considerable degree, on the halo effect. When we teach Urgent Care medicine, we’re not just teaching you the right antibiotic for otitis media, we’re teaching how to think. So, if this intrigues you, if you work Urgent Care medicine, and you want to up your confidence and competence, consider investing in our Urgent Care CME program.

The Q-Wave: You’ve Got to Play the Piano

When I ask that question, I want you to think about how important bedside manner is to you as a clinician. Research has found that if you’re in the bottom third of the Press Ganey scores, you have two and a half times more complaints, two times as many risk management episodes, and medical malpractice claims go up 110%! If you want good Press Ganey scores, you have to play the PIANO for patients. The two biggest complaints related to Press Ganey scores are poor communication and time delays.
