If last week’s events have inspired you to pick up a basketball and shoot some hoops, here are 5 places in town to test and hone your skills: The Waterfront Neighbourhood Centre is a community centre that has been a fixture of the Harbourfront Neighbourhood for the last 20 years. With its instantly recognizable outdoor court that’s always filled with casual, pick-up players, the centre itself has a sleek, urban vibe that embodies the street hoops culture. In terms of the centre’s facilities, it houses a large, lighted outdoor basketball court, as well as a full-sized indoor gymnasium with plenty of nets to go around. The park sports a full-sized, outdoor basketball court that’s interchangeable for full-court or half-court play.
The park features a uniquely designed playground that’s inspired by its natural roots. While the area sports a standard jungle gym with slides, swing sets and monkey bars, the park also has a skateboard area, a volleyball court, a community garden and even an outdoor curling rink that’s open in the winter! The park itself sports some impressive features as well, including an elaborate, castle-themed playground as well as a grand wading pool that’s comparable in size to some small swimming pools! The park’s playground is a practical obstacle course that’s laden with monkey bars, climbing ropes, slides, seesaws and swings.
Fjällräven has been an established global brand for outdoor gear for over 50 years, but they’ve only recently set up a flagship store in downtown Toronto. Most of the retailer’s products are centred around hiking, mountain climbing and winter sports, so it’s not surprising that the Toronto store is loaded with quality apparel suited for all types of weather. Named after the famously serene mountain region in South America, Patagonia was formed over 30 years ago by a small group of avid rock climbers and surfers, all of whom shared the belief that the natural world is a delicate resource that should be enjoyed but must be protected at all costs. In the store, you’ll find plenty of high-end apparel, which is suited for hiking, climbing, swimming and even casual wear.
The store boasts an incredible selection, which include classic road bicycles, mountain bikes, BMXs and even e-bikes. While it does have its occasional closeout sales and its selection of high-end brands, the staff are mainly focused on understanding their customers’ technical or fitness requirements and helping the attain the perfect bike that matches their needs! In addition to their extensive repair station, Bateman’s also has a rental service which can lend quality bikes for day-to-day use and even professional races! Starting out as a co-op repair shop in 1997, Urbane Cyclist has grown into a full-service business that also sells bikes, parts and other accessories.
