UMHS graduate Dr. Banafsheh Motazedi (Class of 2015) is busy completing her internal medicine residency at Providence Health System/George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC. The UMHS Endeavour spoke to Dr. Motazedi about her journey through medical school, meeting her husband during clinical rotations in Michigan, what interests her about endocrinology, and more. Moreover, its small class sizes, accessible professors, courses taught by teaching faculty from US/Canadian medical schools, state-of-the-art campus, its large and well-equipped anatomy lab and incredibly remarkable simulation lab were amongst the pluses that drew my attention toward UMHS. After completing clinical rotations and before starting residency, Dr. Motazedi decided to “give back” and worked with VP of Enrollment Management, Michelle Peres in the UMHS Michigan office.
Other types of students who enter postbacc programs include applicants with a low undergraduate GPA in premed courses and students with borderline MCAT scores, according to a 2016 post in U.S. News and World Report. Because admissions standards are so rigid for many American and Caribbean medical schools, many prospective students, even if they have taken traditional “premed” courses, feel that their overall GPA, grades in core classes and a low MCAT score won’t qualify them for med school. Many of the postbacc programs at large universities also offer interviews with their medical schools, but the acceptance rate into medical school for students who completed a postbacc program at the same university ranges from 55 to 85 percent. Regardless of a student’s pre-medical school foundation, nothing has greater influence on employment in residency than performance on licensing examinations and the academic weight and quality of accomplishments during medical school.
We take a look at the MCAT and all the tests required to become an MD, including Kaplan test preparation for the USMLE Step 1 and why test preparation is important, clinical rotations and shelf examinations, USMLE Step 2, matching, completing residency and passing USMLE Step 3. At UMHS, after passing Step 1 of the USMLE, students take 12 weeks of Internal Medicine; 12 weeks of Surgery; plus 6 weeks of Pediatrics, 6 weeks of Obstetrics and Gynecology; 6 weeks of Pediatrics; 6 weeks of Psychiatry. In addition, Step 2 CK describe clinical situations and students must provide one or more of the following: Kaplan offers various USMLE study programs for Step 2 CK. The final exams required to become a doctor include the USMLE Step 3 and Board Certification exams (which contain written and oral exams).
Members of UMHS AMWA (American Medical Women’s Association) spoke to 6th graders at the private SKI Academy in St. Kitts back on February 25, 2019 about puberty, sexual health and maturation. SKI Academy Vice Principal Nadine Andrea invited AMWA members to come speak to her 6th grade class about sexual health, puberty and the transforming adolescent body. Each of our members were able to discuss important topics such as male and female anatomy, body changes experienced during puberty, sperm maturation, menstruation, fertilization, implantation, pregnancy and fetal development,” she said. There isn’t just one issue regarding sexual health to be discussed; the young people of St. Kitts, like all children of the world, need to be exposed to these terms and allowed the opportunity to be openly inquisitive on these subjects, Ms. Madjer explained.
