why do we celebrate birthdays and why do we eat cake decorated with candles? However, if you think about it, we didn’t have the skills to keep time let alone track birthdays until fairly recently. It remains unclear as to the exact origins of modern birthdays and birthday cakes, however, there seems to be enough of a consensus to piece together an approximate history. In Roman times it was ONLY male’s that had birthdays celebrations.
Like most of us this year I wasn’t able to celebrate with my nearest and dearest, so I created this lockdown cake to bring everyone together. … Let’s hope we’ll all be able to meet again in 2021 The cake base, as is traditional in the UK, is a rich fruit cake. The figures are all modelled from photographs using modelling paste, the song sheets are rice paper and the little dog on the top of the cake is modelling chocolate. So all that remains is to wish you all the best for 2021…let’s hope that by next Christmas we’ll all be able to meet and celebrate together.

As I started to prepare it, I thought it would be a good idea to make a series of videos showing the basic steps, tips, and tricks to achieve the perfect finish. However, with Christmas looming, I believe it’s more important to share with you how to cover a cake with sugarpaste (rolled fondant) rather than how to bake I narrate my video as I go in real-time and have included a few tips and tricks which I’ve found useful over the years that I’ve been cake decorating.
