, I am a little biased since I am quoted in it, but seriously Living with allergies: practical tips for all the family is well thought through and contains just the right amount of information. Emma has accomplished in a book what Dr Gupta and I wish to bring your every other week on The Itch Podcast. Let’s hope that section will be helpful enough I won’t have to worry about soft play areas and allergies ever! Even if you’ve been living with allergies your whole life and think they’re under control, I suggest giving this book a read.
April’s allergy inspiration comes from Alida, who you may recognise from our series on Intuitive Eating for Food Allergies. When were you diagnosed: Peanuts – officially diagnosed at 3 yrs but had my first reaction at 18 months, shellfish when I was a few years older (can’t remember exactly when) Q: Biggest struggle as a kid & advice you would give to help overcome it: Alida: Eating at friends’ homes and going to birthday parties. The alternative was for my parents to send me along with safe snacks and treats to help ease my mind, but I always hated feeling different than the others and feeling like they thought I was strange for not being able to eat whatever they were eating. My best advice for feeling more comfortable eating out is to get a job working in food service if it’s safe for you!
Some of the research I did for travelling to South Africa with food allergies was to contact the Allergy Foundation South Africa, I contacted them about labelling and general awareness. I am sharing my eating experiences in South Africa by city, as this is the best way to showcase how awareness varies from place to place. The conclusion after the first night of eating in South Africa with food allergies was that the kitchen staff don’t have a good awareness of allergies and won’t be careful about cross-contact. If you eat out make sure to contact the restaurant ahead of time, ask for the manager and order with them, bring an allergy card that clearly explains cross-contact and your needs.
