This Pink & Gold Flamingo Cake is a perfect spring or summer cake design for a Flamingo Party! Ariel had told me she wanted the cake to be shades of pink, white and gold with maybe some flowers. Pre-made gum paste flowers are something I keep on hand (a variety of flowers in different shapes and sizes), so I chose a handful of those to add to the cake too Gold drip was added to the solid pink middle tier (although it was a little runnier than I prefer and melted easily) – and painted some of the flowers gold. The cake was 4″, 6″ and 8″ tiers of the best strawberry cake.
This was a groom’s cake but it would also be a fantastic birthday cake! Susan came up that weekend because the wedding cake that went along with this groom’s cake required a truck-load of piping. Wafer paper is one of my favorite mediums for cake decorating (remember the flowers I made? ), so I decided to make the grass from wafer paper. These cactus pretzel rods will go with so many party themes… a Fiesta party, a Llama party, a Flamingo party or even a straight-up Cactus themed party! Shortening (optional and not pictured, but highly recommended for thinning candy melts – see this post: How to Thin Candy Melts) And while I didn’t take pics, I did make a video for you showing just how easy these Cactus Pretzel Rods are to make: You might notice in the pic below that I didn’t use the same sprinkles on all of them. You see – the day before the baby shower, it was sort of a last minute request from our pastor’s wife for me to make these Cactus Pretzel Rods for the shower. I used White Jimmies (from this jar of mixed sprinkles), some sparkling chunky white sugar, and some white confetti sprinkles.
