Advice to the new military spouse from your new family

Whether you are brand new spouse or you’re just looking for something to make a crappy day easier, here’s the best your military family had to offer. The people you meet as military spouses are your new family remember that and be kind you are all in the same boat. ~ Kathrine It’s so hard to put yourself out there as an adult, but in this style of life, it is necessary to stay sane. ~ Victoria You can only succeed with a village. ~ Don’t bottle up your emotions, share how you’re feeling with them when it’s appropriate. ~ Lisa Don’t fault your spouse for their employer’s choices. ~ Debbie Always be open with your spouse and communication is key. ~

Panic, you're posted! (But first...)

We can talk about it, encourage each other on it, be sure to get out as much info as we can to make it as pain free as is humanly possible, make sure evaluations get to the right people, inform the chain of command and the powers that be of all our issues as they happen to us, but we can’t just snap our fingers and make that system different. Calian, and Primacy, took on creating this program by reaching out to their network of physicians and asking them to expand their practice to take on the families of the serving military, without compensation from the DND, as a way to give back to the military community, and have placed over 1000 military families with physicians since it’s creation. Truth is, I couldn’t if I tried, that’s one of those things that’s better left for people much smarter and more experienced than I.

Our tribe has a name

Late last year I took part in a Canadian Forces Women’s Influencer Event and it gave me an amazing insight into the opportunities in the Canadian Forces and some of the amazing ladies who are taking advantage of them. When he gave it to me, he spoke about the importance of the family unit when it comes to the military, and he took the time to emphasize how vital he felt it was for the military to recognize and support military spouses and families. Not just for military families, but for first responder families and for doctor’s families and for oil worker’s families and all other dynamics. If we, as a culture, are going to recognize the importance of the family unit and tribe as paramount to strong mental health and resiliency both within the Forces and outside it (and we should because research like this and this and many more show its value) then we need to start recognizing the tribes who take on that role.

Canadian Forces Women's Influencer Event what I learned

So when I was invited to the Woman’s Influencer event by the Canadian Forces Recruiting Center Prairies and North, I was not totally sure how I ended up there. It wasn’t the fact that some of the members we met were gay, or part of a visible minority group that fascinated me, because it’s 2017 guys, but more because I was looking for the loophole. One of these women was on maternity leave and came in to speak to us of the time she’s served, the challenges she’s reached and the opportunities she’s had. I learned a lot about the opportunities the Forces offers during my time with the Women’s Influencer.
