Everything You Need To Know About a Calm Down Kit!

Depending on the needs of your students, some teachers choose to include the calm down kit  in their calm down area  to provide more visuals, however this is NOT necessary if those visuals are not needed for your kids. ON THE GO  was created after I saw my students being successful with their calm down kit tools in the classroom. A calm down kit is a kit full of visuals and tools to help students cope with their emotions in a positive and safe manner. I like these tools because after awhile I am able to see my students utilize the visuals and tools needed to calm down with little to no assistance from staff.

New Year, New You, New Perspective

I personally don’t like to make New Year’s resolutions, I find that they tend to be a little trendy and full of a lot of hope with not a lot of purposeful thought put into them. What I do like to do is to sit down and think about the past few months and evaluate if I'm happy with where I'm at. It's also important to note that I reflect on everything every few months, not just in January. My life has shifted drastically with the addition of Tucker, and one thing is for sure, I don't want to waste any of my time with him while he's still little.

Motivating the Kids With Zero Motivation

I, personally, believe it is a combo of both just like I believe that both nature and environment both play a role in a persons ability to maintain self control. When I was in the classroom, I taught students with severe disabilities and I ran my whole class using a token economy system. I personally did not use food as reinforcers, but this could also be an opportunity to pass out a healthy treat to the kids on task to get the student who is struggling's attention. If the student is going through a challenging time, sometimes we need to revisit the task expectation.

Teaching Students to Take a Break

Some students will be able to recognize when they need a break, and some students may choose to act out and need prompting from staff to take a break. For example, if a student is demonstrating challenging behavior and would benefit from a break, I like to prompt them with a break card and help them to request it however they are able to. I like to use these transition cue cards in various aspects of the day, not just for breaks. Some students may need less breaks, or shorter breaks.
