I had these court documents, but I didn’t actually know where he lived or how to contact him, so I was combing through Facebook, looking for people in a similar demographic in a similar geographic area, and I found someone with the same name and age who looks like a factory worker. I don’t think he wanted to be cool or anything, I think he just wanted to unburden himself. There’s a lot of self-released music that doesn’t make it to a place like Spotify or Pandora. 80 percent of the book is original reporting, and people think they know the story, but they don’t.
