I decided I wouldn’t buy any clothes or accessories for myself, and I planned very strictly what I was allowed to buy for Penny (only things she needed Even though I said the “no shopping rule” was in effect for just February and March, I may extend it because I’ve been able to really assess the items I own, and I realize that I have plenty of clothing. I am learning to say no to things, which is hard because I’m a people person, a people pleaser, and I want to do all the things! I know that’s cliche, but I truly have more than I need, so I feel like I need to walk that walk for a while and resist buying things just for the “entertainment” of shopping.
This week I’ve been writing about the goals I have for myself to help improve my health, and part of those goals for me is my mental health. Usually when I refer to self-care, I’m referring to things that I enjoy doing, creating me-time and showing myself the same care and love that I hope I am showing others. Lately, the simple ways that I have shown myself care have included making time to read a book or allowing myself naps on the weekends while my daughter is napping. A few of those things include spending time with girlfriends, doing an art project for the home, writing more in my journal and getting a pedicure (desperately needed after the long winter! ).
In an effort to eat better, I am trying hard to buy groceries my family needs regularly so I have the ingredients available to make healthy meals. Sounds simple, but man, it’s so easy to forget one component or plan on something that takes longer to thaw, or longer to cook, then you accounted for. If I had to bring a turkey sandwich or eat a frozen meal at lunch every day, it’d be easier for me to scrap that plan and go out to eat. Once or twice a week, we plan on having turkey sandwiches because it just makes the evenings run smoothly without a lot of fuss.
I’m starting with fitness because in some ways it’s the goal I have made the least progress with so far. So, instead I’m trying to find other ways to just move more. And I’m hosting a Makeshift 5k on April 6, plus planning to do the Girls on the Run 5k at the end of April. I’m ready to get my sweat on, and I’m happy to help others get moving too!
