There’s so many relatable scenarios in the movie, but with your character specifically, something that I think a lot of people can take away is that kind of weird but sincere stage of trying to befriend your ex and not really knowing if it’s possible. SooHoo: What I love is that it really does broaden your circle and you are able to connect with people that you would never probably ever get to connect with or even seek to connect with had it not been for the apps. Versus, I think people are just thinking that they can find someone that fits perfectly with them, minus the work, and I think love is work. Because we know that there are so many other people out there, it’s making it harder to find people who will settle down and actually commit to working when it’s tough.
You know, my biggest hope is that I’m able to kind of capture a certain feeling and that maybe if seeing that feeling portrayed onscreen, you’ll have a little bit more perspective on why you do the things you do when you’re dating and why these things happened. I think that’s maybe the bigger message is that, you know, there’s so many different types of experiences happening on them and I think maybe the bigger message is about how we can’t get so caught up in it. And I think sometimes on dating apps, people who do want a relationship feel weird being open about that, because they almost feel like they’re supposed to only want to hook up if you’re on an app. It’s a difficult thing and, you know, I think these apps are a way to kind of maybe hide behind those things or to distract yourself.
I’m not saying that we’re perfect, but I feel like we just happen to be going in the right direction. And just as in people’s personal lives, in real life, in the whole world, there’s gonna be obstacles that we’re all gonna have to get over. But I feel like this generation, we’re crazy millennials or whatever, but I feel like we see something that maybe past generations didn’t see. You’re already inspiring people, so know that, and it’s just gonna blow up from here.
I recently had the privilege of sitting down with the cast of Netflix’s new original series Dating Around to dish on the hurdles of dating. When I was approached to host this roundtable update, I was thrilled not just because it’s fucking Netflix, hello, but because this show is a great example of the larger conversation with dating. This dialogue was not just a shit-talking fest like many may hope (although trust me, I would’ve loved to go in on Justin, but Leonard and Gurki reminded me what grace looks like). It brings everything bottled deep down inside of you to the surface, especially for these six people who did it in front of the world, and now you have to deal with what’s still stirring around inside of you that seems to come up any time you try to bring someone else into the picture.
