I have seen my dad use this tactic several times with a slate call, but it took me several years of failing to get as close I could to perfecting this technique on a mouth call. Often, a fighting purr is good to use when you have a long beard that is henned up. But I will frequently use fighting purrs throughout the beginning of spring when turkeys are establishing their pecking order, causing them to be more aggressive with one another. At times, the fighting purr can be one of the deadliest calls there is and can get a gobbler fired up.
Just because a bird has gone silent, especially late in the season, doesn’t mean the bird has spooked or is gone. Some of the best places I’ve had success looking for strut zones are field corners and slight rises on logging roads. From my experience, when myself or other hunters consider a bird to be hung up, they are probably just choosing not to leave their strutting zone where hens are probably at, too. Gobblers that frequently visit these strut zones usually tend to do so late in the morning and/or late in the evening, although they could anytime during the day also.
