The National Center for Children and Families is a non-profit tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization
She was a student leader during the 1968 Black Student Walkout, which ultimately led to significant reforms focused on increasing diversity and inclusion at Brown. She now serves as trustee emerita and has been recognized by the University with the Brown Bear Award and the John Hope Award for Public Service. This forum will draw on Chapman’s personal experience growing up under an unrelenting assault on her identity as well as coping, adaptive responses which collectively serve as protection and have guided her path toward advocacy, innovation, and social justice. Under her leadership, the organization has become a comprehensive center serving more than 50,000 homeless and impoverished children and their parents, survivors of domestic violence, and abused and neglected children and adolescents who have been removed from their families.
It was just a normal day at The Kennedy, NCCF’s Short Term Family Housing program in D. C.’s The Kennedy, which serves as a temporary home for homeless DC children and their parents as they transition to stable housing, can be a busy place in the mornings with residents heading off to school, work, or other appointments, but this day was about to get a lot more interesting for Ashley Walston, a residential assistant who started in February of this year. As the pain worsened, and it became apparent that the baby would be born right then and there, Ashley summoned all her skills and worked to continue to calm the little boys all the while holding hands with and supporting the mom. I was glad that I happened to be at the desk that day and was there to help her bring new life into the world, right outside the doors of the Kennedy.
PMG employs more than 440 people who are all encouraged to participate in “giving back” efforts and events through PMG as well as their own personal efforts, fostering a community of givers that expands far beyond the reach of just this region. Several years ago, with the support of his wife and daughter, Mr. Ejtemai established The Abdolhossein and Guitty Ejtemai Foundation, whose mission is to provide assistance to organizations furthering the promotion of arts, education, and human rights. In September of 2011, Mr. Ejtemai donated the use of a 25-acre personal estate to serve as a foster care home for at-risk children in the National Capital Area. In partnership with NCCF, the foster care facility has successfully housed three foster families, safely served as a temporary home for more than 40 children, and currently houses 7 children, all of whom are teen mothers recovering from traumatic events and situations.
Each week she offers residents a smile and an opportunity to alter or enhance their clothing. Although NCCF provides access to a donation center and boutique where clients can find clothing free-of-charge, often that clothing is not the right size, or the most fashionable option. She has created a special pillow out of a t-shirt for a child; taken-in and hemmed slacks for a client going on an important interview; and added sparkle to a sweatshirt for the 100th day of school. Pamela Mintz embodies the spirit of NCCF’s mission to give our residents and clients the means and opportunity to achieve their own goals.
