And I know I was thankful to discover this alternative and thought it would aid others in making their travel decisions. The Alternative Rainbow Mountain of Palccoyo is more a rainbow valley than a rainbow mountain. You can take the 4-5 day Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu and see the beautiful Humantay Lake on the way. After the Inca Trail the Salkantay trek is the second most popular trek to Machu Picchu and definitely a great option to consider. Clearly I was fascinated not just by the variation in color, which is due to the different level of salt crystallization, but because they seemed to go on forever fitting perfectly like pieces of a giant jigsaw puzzle. Besides this being a scenic marvel it is also about tradition and culture and for this the Maras Salt mines are some of the best of Sacred Valley and an essential experience you should not miss.

The Island of Mull off the west coast of Scotland is my happy place. The list of Happy Places in Scotland would not be complete without a castle or two and Dunnottar castle is where I find my happy place in Scotland.
