Behavioral Healthcare has been named a Top Mental Health First Aid Instructor for 2018 by the National Council for Behavioral Health. Top Instructors were recognized at the 2019 Mental Health First Aid Instructor Summit in March in Nashville, Tenn. Top Instructors were selected based on the number of people they taught in the 2018 calendar year in the standard Mental Health First Aid curriculum or in any of its audience-focused modules: Public Safety, Fire/EMS, Higher Education, Older Adults and Veterans. Wheeler is the Community Liaison and Mental Health First Aid Instructor and Educator at Starting Point Behavioral Healthcare, a community-based behavioral health treatment agency in Northeast Florida, where she has worked for the past 18 years. Wheeler received her Master’s in Mental Health Counseling in 2009 from Webster University, and is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida, a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia, and is a Master’s Level Certified Addiction Professional and Substance Abuse Professional.

In Nassau County, the suicide rate is currently above the Florida state average and the number of Baker Acts (committing a person to a mental health facility without their consent) has risen dramatically over the last few years. Starting Point Behavioral Healthcare is hosting a discussion about suicide at its next Community Conversations on Tuesday, May 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Nassau County Council on Aging Fernandina Beach Life Center, 1901 Island Walk Way. The event includes three individuals who will speak about suicide prevention and how to identify someone at risk for suicide, as well as the steps being taken by Starting Point to address this public health issue in Nassau County. Starting Point Behavioral Healthcare provides mental health and substance abuse treatment services to children, teens and adults in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.

The 8-hour classes take place at Starting Point Behavioral Healthcare’s Yulee campus at 463142 SR 200. The Mental Health First Aid program teaches participants a five-step action plan to assess a situation, select and implement interventions and secure appropriate care for the person who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Starting Point staff member Katrina Robinson-Wheeler is certified by the National Council to provide the Mental Health First Aid program. Since Starting Point began offering the program in 2014, more than 2,000 Northeast Florida residents have received the training.
