We asked about moving to an open spot on an inside face dock but were told that those slips were assigned to long-term slip holders already. Fort Pulaski National Monument is actually located on an island between Savannah and Tybee called Cockspur Island. After Pulaski, we opted to head into Savannah rather than take a trip to Tybee Island. We had a weather window coming up so on April 8th we left Hilton Head aimed for Florida & The Bahamas!

Just before 3 am on March 23 while Michelle was on watch, the wind abruptly shifted from westerly to easterly and began to quickly build to 30+ knots. While attempting to wrangle the main back into some idea of order by wrapping an extra line around it and the boom, old school style, is when I discovered a rather large tear in the leech of our mainsail. This time we saw that our best option given our mast height was going to be the back side of Hilton Head Island. What this meant is that by the time we bashed ourselves into the channel and inlet, through Port Royal Sound, into Skull Creek, then tied up to the fuel dock at Skull Creek Marina, all in the dark, it was 3 am.

There was a debate about how close to round the Diamond Shoals at Hatteras but we quickly sorted that out and then proceeded to aim for Cape Lookout and Lookout Shoals. After rounding Lookout, again with nothing exciting to report we headed for Cape Fear and the Frying Pan Shoals. While Bald Head Island wasn’t the least expensive spot to stay it was definitely a neat little island. Bald Head Island was the primary shooting location for the film, as well as a major location for the early 90’s film ‘The Butcher’s Wife’.

But, I ended up finding a really great full-time job in my field that I started in September 2017. But, in October, Matt was told that the “remote” part of his remote job (that he had been doing for over 5 years) was probably going away at the end of the year (long story for some other day). We knew then, that he would either need to find a new job, move back to Texas, or work in an office in a few other location options – none of which were on the coast, or near my new job. We decided I would finish out a big event for work that was scheduled for the end of February, and then leave Virginia to head to Bahamas.
