Parents of teens and young adults need to be aware of the risks of meningococcal disease, especially meningitis B, and how to protect your kids from it. According to the CDC, adolescents and young adults are the primary carriers of meningococcal bacteria, even if it doesn’t make them sick. Plus, some of their most typical behaviors—such as being close-quartered in classrooms and dorms, sharing drinks and utensils, and kissing—can promote the spread of bacterial meningitis. Dr. Richard Chung, Director of Adolescent Medicine at Duke University, discusses what parents must know about this disease and why parents should consider the meningitis B vaccine to protect their children.

About our expert: Betty Sao-Hou Lai is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the School of Public Health at Georgia State University.
