Gartner Research predicts that by 2017 about 50 percent of global enterprises will be using hybrid cloud infrastructures, while a Dimensional Research survey found that approximately 77 percent of IT professionals are planning to deploy multiple clouds within the next 12 months. Phil Hochmuth, a leading voice in marketing intelligence, says the new popularity of multi-cloud options can be linked to a number of factors. He cites the information of two technology analysts and suggests that economics and availability are two major reasons multi-cloud infrastructure is seeing increased adoption. Infoworld’s David Linthicum, however, warns that companies considering multi-cloud environments should remember that such infrastructure requires more security, due to the complexity of the system.
Linthicum says that while it makes sense that very large enterprises are entrusting their migration to the cloud to big name companies, smaller cloud providers have not been eradicated from the picture. The market is dominated by existing players who can spend billions on both R&D and marketing,” he states, adding that new providers will have to work on leveraging new cloud technology and using it for growth. Linthicum also predicts that private cloud-only implementations will decrease, to make way for a more hybrid system where public and private clouds are combined to form hybrid or multi-cloud systems, providing companies with more options. The hybrid cloud is often seen as more cost-effective and scalable, meaning that the number of businesses choosing to employ only private clouds will “fall substantially in the next few years.
