Hi! I’m Megan Marsiglio. I’m a mom, wife, entrepreneur, and a gut health advocate. I started The Gut Gazette back in 2009 after finally being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and IBS (it took two years for doctors to diagnose me) as an outlet to connect with others online who were going through the same experiences.
For years I felt extremely isolated and humiliated about having digestive issues—I felt like I was the only person who was anxious if I’d make it to the bathroom in time. I was always in pain, always running to the bathroom and I avoided a lot of situations so that I didn’t have to talk about what I was experiencing.
As I slowly began opening up about what I was dealing with, I learned that many others dealt with the same issues—they just weren’t talking about it. I realized this lack of conversation was a contributor to the stigma of gut issues, which is what ignited my passion to increase the conversation and push awareness. I’m very involved in the digestive health community as a patient advocate and a patient representative for a Canadian-wide research study called IMAGINE. The Gut Gazette is a resource, a support network, a community and a voice to make change. The Gut Gazette is a platform for digestive health with the aim to remove the stigma associated with digestive health issues - and issues related to gut health & wellness (such as bathroom anxiety). I work to educate and inform people about gut health, and inspire self-advocacy for patients and caregivers.
Issues and diseases related to the digestive system are topics people don’t like to talk about and because of that, digestive health issues are commonly stigmatized. The Gut Gazette provides tips and advice for digestion, tummy-friendly recipes, allergy-friendly products, and a space for contributors to share their digestive health journey and a platform for readers to relate and interact.
The Gut Gazette audience is full of people with digestive health issues, including, but not limited to: IBS, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, GERD, diverticulitis, and food sensitivities. The audience is gutsy and bold. They are open to learning about anything that may help their situation and they’re very enthusiastic in helping spread empowering messages to their circles.
