Mother's Day TrEATS

This healthier alternative to sugary spreads is made from cacao, dates and Madagascar vanilla bean ghee, it’s low-glycemic, nut-free and lactose-free, and it’s delicious! With a heritage that dates back to 1454, these cookie-like sweets are made from finely ground almonds, candied melon fruit and orange peel, set on a thin layer of wafer and topped with royal icing. Flowers are lovely, but if you’d like to offer a different kind of blossom, check out these gorgeous and delicious individual apple pies from Chudleigh’s. Chudleigh’s Apple Crumble Blossom gift box is a limited edition gift box that includes ten fully baked crumble crunch apple blossoms, made from scratch with freshly peeled Northern Spy Apples.

Keep Saying by Tanis MacDonald

When I read that Cormier ranted about Tina, I thought of the way one of Helen Betty Osborne’s killers confessed drunkenly, publicly, for years. When I teach Marilyn Dumont’s poem for Betty, I want my students to know Helen Betty Osborne was a person, a student their age. It’s been twelve years since I lived in Winnipeg full-time: nearly all of Tina Fontaine’s short life. I taught Soraya Peerbaye’s Tell this week, and I couldn’t begin to lead students into that book without acknowledging the death of Tina Fontaine alongside the death of Reena Virk, and remembering how hard Virk’s family fought in the court system for their daughter to be understood as valued, as loved: not a young woman with brown skin drifting away from her family.

Stress, Sexual Desire and Mindfulness by Lori Brotto

Increasingly, we rely on technological advances to accomplish the never-ending list of tasks on our to-do list and able” to eat, respond to emails, surf the Internet, check Facebook, and help a child with homework all at the same time makes many of us feel proficient, and we take pride in balancing all these different activities at the same time. As you continue to focus on the sensations associated with breathing, you may start to notice when the in-breath changes to the out-breath and when the out-breath circles around to the next in-breath. You may become quite skilled at deciphering all of the individual sensations associated with breathing, including the breath’s rate, pace, depth, and location, as well as whether there are sounds associated with breathing, whether there is tension in the body, and whether you want to continue noticing your breath During a typical mindfulness practice, whether you are paying attention to your breath or to a specific location in the body, your mind will remain present for a while but then will likely drift—to other physical locations in the body, to sounds inside the room or outside the window, and almost inevitably to thoughts such as Am I doing this correctly?

The Future Is Female, the Future Is Fast by Kelly Quinn

Fast and Female is an international organization co-founded by Rosanna Crawford’s older sister, skier Chandra Crawford, with the goal of keeping girls between the ages of 8 and 18 in sports. As a parent of two daughters in this age group, I’m keenly interested in this project, and my own experience as a non-athletic child and teen actually makes me all the more eager for inspiration on how to encourage girls to stay in sports. For example, I was fascinated to learn about research that shows that for boys, participation in sports builds social bonds, but for girls, it’s the opposite: pre-existing social bonds are the foundation for their enjoyment of sports. My daughters got their Fast and Female buffs at “Champ Chats”, Fast and Female events led by female athletes in a variety of sports.
