However, it’s important to know whether to use heat therapy or ice treatments to resolve lower back pain. While both can be effective, you’ll find that ice therapy is more effective for some types of lower back pain, while heat therapy offers more relief for other types of back pain. For acute back pain, most people find that ice therapy helps to reduce the inflammation and alleviates discomfort. Applying an ice pack to the affected area immediately after exercising helps to minimise inflammation and should, therefore, reduce any pain or discomfort.
Back pain problems include a range of conditions related to the bones, joints, connective tissue, muscles and nerves of the back. In Australia, back pain is the second leading cause of ‘disease burden‘ (disease burden is the impact of a health problem as measured by financial cost, mortality, morbidity, or other indicators) In one study, 14% of people experience constant or persistent pain while 86% experience pain one day/week • Stretch, manual therapies (chiropractic, physiotherapy, remedial massage), improve posture, use ice or heat therapy, and try to stay active.
In America, over $50 billion is spend each year on a range of back pain treatments • Back (and neck) pain is the number one cause of disability in developed countries (in terms of disability adjusted life years) • Anatomy facts: Your back is made up of spinal joints, discs, nerves, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Stay active and exercise, try manual therapies (chiropractic, physiotherapy, remedial massage), stretch regularly, try ice therapy to reduce pain
With a few known causes covered, let’s turn to how a chiropractor may help. It’s well known that chiropractors can provide effective reduction of musculoskeletal pain, including in the hips. Chiropractors perform what’s called ‘adjustments’ to help rectify physical problems in their patients. As we’ve seen, pain in the hips is a common burden for millions of people.
