Hiiiii 👋🏼 long time no see here on my feed. It’s been a busy summer road tripping through all the mountains of Norway all the way up to Lofoten in the Arctic! We’ve been here for over a month now and not going to lie, it’s freeezing 🥶and has me thinking of warmer days down in ☀️ Hemsedal where we spent our days making flower crowns, chasing waterfalls, hiking the mountain tops, swimming in lakes and jumping into glacial rivers (okay that was also freezing 🙊) While this summer has been one wild ride, one thing that’s been constant on the adventure is my beautiful new @ethnasia_jewelry I have barely taken off their awesome rings since I received them a few months ago and I am in love with the boho style of this small business from Greece 😍 I don’t promote much on here but seriously, if you’re searching for some beautifully made boho jewellery, I highly recommend you check them out and support an independent artist. Would you stay in a Wilderness Lavvo? If you caught my stories a couple of weeks ago you would probably already know how much fun @jack_m_wood_photography and I had at @dagali_fjellpark and sleeping in one of their beautiful Lavvos. We spend the morning carving up the slopes with our downhill skis before swapping them out for the countless cross country tracks surrounding the area which led right to the door of our cosy Lavvo. After enjoying some local tea which was foraged from the surrounding woods, heading into the sauna was the perfect end to a perfect day - and I’m sure my muscles were thanking me! Dagali is also home to the longest sled run in Norway!! Sadly there was too much snow (did you ever think you’d here me say that?) for us to have a go on this trip but it’s just another reason to go back! If you think the Lavvo looks cold from the outside, you’ll be happy to know that they are actually super warm! (Electric heating for the win!) This week we ventured across the lake into Hallingskarvet National Park and I have two words for it... POWDER BOWLS! ❄️❄️❄️⠀ ⠀ The mountains aren't too tall but because of their shapes, the snow blows in and stays there. 😍 With bowl after bowl, you can ski here all day and because of its location, you'll be competing with no one but your own tracks.⠀ ⠀ The only downside? It's a 30min ski tour across the frozen lake to reach this powder paradise, and I hate touring on the flat 🙈⠀ ⠀ Anyone have any tips to make skinning across the lake more enjoyable? Just me and my millions of layers 🤣 If you're in the US/Canada you've probably been experiencing the winter vortex which has been bringing INCREDIBLY cold conditions to the mountains. Here in Norway, we have had daily highs of -20 for a couple of weeks now and it's safe to say that my feet are hating being in ski boots. 🥶🎿⠀ ⠀ I've found that no matter what I do, my feet always end up turning into feelingless iceblocks. If you've ever tried skiing when you can't feel your feet, you will know that it's incredibly challenging. ⠀ ⠀ My #1 tip for anyone who suffers from cold feet whilst ski touring is to scrunch your toes with every step. It won't instantly bring them back to life but if you persist for at least 10 mins, you will prevent them from getting too bad and eventually you'll be able to bring them back to a normal temperature. ⠀ ⠀ Do you suffer from terrible circulation? With nothing in our vicinity bar a couple of empty cabins, the mountains are our playground. No need to worry about ski area boundaries, privatised land or rough fences. 3 Little Know Adventure Travel Destinations! ⬇️⠀ ⠀ 1️⃣ France - I first visited France when I was 18. I had been obsessed with Pairs for years and like most people, I never really thought past the Eiffel Tower. Since then I discovered so many amazing places for adventure like Chamonix, Gorges du Verdon and The Pyrenees Mountains.⠀ ⠀ 2️⃣ The Philippines - Did you know there is some AMAZING rock climbing in the Philippines? Hidden away in tiny local villages you will find huge crags with so many different types of rock. Alongside that, The Philippines is a scuba diving paradise with opportunities to swim with all sorts of marine life including whale sharks! ⠀ ⠀ 3️⃣ Tonga - The only place in the world where you can swim with HUMPBACK WHALES, do I even need to say more? If you've never heard of Tonga, it's a collection of islands in the South Pacific, just above New Zealand. The nature there is incredible and people are honestly the friendliest I have ever met. I went there not knowing anything about the country and it blew my mind! What to wear when you go ski touring... 🎿⠀ ⠀ If you caught the quiz on my story the other day you might have been surprised to see that it was -17° C yet I didn't even have a hat on my head! 😱⠀ ⠀ Layering for ski touring could possibly be one of the biggest challenges of the sport! Here is how I layer for the ascent in different temperatures. ⠀ ⠀ ❄️ Above -5°C: ⠀ Non-thermal long-sleeve top ⠀ Non-thermal leggings ⠀ Uninsulated ski pants with vents⠀ ⠀ ❄️ -5° to -10°C: ⠀ + Thermal Top⠀ + Thermal leggings ⠀ ⠀ ❄️ -10° to -15°C: ⠀ + Gortex, uninsulated shell jacket with vents ⠀ ⠀ ❄️ Below -15°C: ⠀ + R1 Patagonia Mid Layer⠀ + Bike Shorts⠀ ⠀ ➕ In addition to these layers, I always start off with thin gloves, a neckwarmer and beanie. ⠀ ⠀ ⤵️ For the way down, I always carry a puffer jacket, Gortex shell jacket and thick mitts. I don't necessarily always use both but I always have them with me just in case!⠀ ⠀ ☀️ If ski touring in the sun, move up one category of warmth. Chamonix is actually considered the birthplace of mountaineering! ⠀ ⠀ In 1760 a Swiss naturalist named Horace Benedict de Saussure came to Chamonix and saw Mt Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, for the first time. He immediately offered a reward to the first person to summit it. ⠀ ⠀ The feat was finally accomplished in 1786 by Michel-Gabriel Paccard and Jacques Balmat. This is now considered the first act of mountaineering and places Chamonix firmly in the history books. ⠀ ⠀ Later, Chamonix also claimed the title of being the home of the first-ever winter Olympics! ⠀ ⠀ Today, thousands of people flock here not only to climb it's surrounding peaks but dine, shop and bask in the town's location. ⠀ ⠀ I loved calling Chamonix home and getting to experience these dramatic mountains every single day. Although this sunrise was incredibly spectacular, it was also incredibly cold! 🥶⠀ ⠀ We woke up in the dark, got our skis ready and headed up. This spot is less than a 40 min ski tour from our doorstep so luckily for us, we didn't have to get up too early. ⠀ ⠀ It was around -20°C and we spent another 40 mins watching the sunrise and taking photos of the gorgeous surrounds. ⠀ ⠀ Although I added all my extra layers quickly, I got so caught up on the incredible colours dancing across the sky that I forgot my #1 rule. Act quickly and act early! ⠀ ⠀ We should have started moving at the first feelings of cold but instead, we waited until we couldn't feel our toes to start the descent. ⠀ ⠀ By the time we got inside, it took the rest of the day to regain full sensation in my feet and when the blood finally rushed back, my feet felt like they were on fire! ⠀ ⠀ Have you ever tried to ski without being able to feel your feet? This is Lake Noir in Chamonix, France 🇫🇷⠀ After the second lockdown, @magdalenakorzeniak and I were determined to get out into the mountains despite the recent dumps of snow we had been getting. ⠀ ⠀ We actually planned to hike to Lake Cornu and calculated the hike should take us around 6 hours to complete. We were prepared for some snow up high but didn't expect there to be so much and the path to the shores of the lake to be so steep. ⠀ ⠀ By the time we finally caught a glimpse of the first lake (noir), we realised that wasn't the safest conditions to descend the steep slope and that it was unlikely that we would be able to continue through the knee-deep snow to the farthest lake. ⠀ ⠀ Luckily, as we climbed over the ridge and the mountains revealed this view, we knew it didn't matter. Golden hour brought out a million different beautiful colours in the rocky peaks and the snow sparkled a brilliant white. ⠀ ⠀ We didn't actually make it to Lake Cornu and our hike took all of 8 hours. How to get into ski touring as a beginner. ⬇️⠀ ⠀ Trying a new sport can be intimidating, especially when there aren't many organised groups to help you get started. This year, with most of the worlds' ski resorts being closed, more people than ever have turned to the backcountry and are discovering ski touring for the first time. ⠀ ⠀ If you've been watching on in envy because you're not quite sure how to jump in, here are the tips you need to get started!⠀ ⠀ ❄️ Find someone who knows about touring. This person doesn't have to be an expert as you shouldn't be going on a difficult tour at first anyway. If you don't already have ski touring friends, try posting in Facebook groups for your local area or book a guide to show you the ropes. ⠀ ⠀ ❄️ Choose a short, easy, well-marked track. Some ski resorts will have designated ski touring routes which means that you most likely won't have to break your own trail and you can focus on learning the technique. Ask around to find popular routes for your first few days out.⠀ ⠀ ❄️ Check the avalanche forecast and make sure you are heading out in the safest avalanche conditions possible. Choose category 1 or 2 days, stick to slopes under 30° and avoid avalanche traps. ⠀ ⠀ ❄️ Rent the equipment you don't already have. Don't go out and buy everything before you try ski touring. Just because you love skiing, doesn't necessarily mean you will love touring. If you don't have access to a rental shop, it might be worth starting off with snowshoes and a sturdy backpack to carry your skis. Just until you are sure you want to invest in a proper setup. ⠀ ⠀ Lastly, just do it! Winter ❄️ Vs Summer ☀️, which do you prefer? ⠀ ⠀ You might not know it but this photo was actually taken at the start of summer in Chamonix, France. We had just come out of our first lockdown and were SO ready to get back into the mountains. Although the hike was snowy, the sun was shining and we saw the amazing colours of bright blue glacial lakes contrasting with the pristine white snow on their shores. 😍⠀ ⠀ I can never choose between Summer and Winter, I love them both! During winter I always find that I never want it to end. Then when summer rolls around and the sun hits my skin, I feel like I don't want winter to come... until the first snowflakes start falling and the cycle repeats 🤣⠀ ⠀ ⠀ What about you?
