We treat people, not just their pain.
Even before the pandemic, the younger generation was already spending WAY too much time on their phones and other devices. We are seeing a greater increase in young children coming in for neck, mid and low back pain due to the use of devices and the lack of physical activity. This is leading them down a path to more serious ailments when all of this is very treatable and easy to retrain at a young age! First and foremost, I want to express that these are simply suggestions to try with your kids, however it is encouraged to have them come into the clinic and get evaluated for their specific needs.
Current CDC recommendations encourage children to be involved in “moderate to vigorous” physical activity daily for 60 minutes each time. It’s also important for them to have a combination of activities that will help to build strong bones and muscles, as well as for a healthy cardiovascular system. Being active helps to promote strong bones and muscles, a healthy heart, improved mood, and a lower risk of developing certain health conditions later in life. This year has proven to be particularly challenging to stay active, especially with kids having to stay home for schooling and decreased sporting activities available.
Simple activities such as driving, working at your desk or even sleeping in a flexed position, cause hip flexor muscles to constantly be in a shortened position where they become tight. Additionally, overtime the tightness in this area can lead to a pull on your back muscles as well, due to the origin of the back muscle affecting your gait and standing posture. This posture can create a forward hinge at the hips, putting additional stress on the lower back. Below, we have included some simple exercises that you can try at home that can help reduce stress in the hips and lumbar spine.
We may be used to walking more throughout the day; whether it is to the water cooler, the copier, the bathroom or just different parts around the office. We have adjusted to sitting at home whether it is on a nice comfy couch or not so comfy office/kitchen chair. Physical therapists are movement experts and are even trained on proper posture for how to set up your home to avoid these new aches and pains! A simple walk around the house (inside or out) can get the blood flowing and the muscles pumping!
