Spend the morning exploring the Wellington Murals and the Socrates Sculpture Park in Astoria, then ride down to Long Island City’s Gantry State Park for some afternoon playtime and photo ops in front of the Pepsi-Cola sign (more on these activities below). But we were able to see some really good stuff in Northwestern and Northeastern Queens, in these neighborhoods: Astoria, Long Island City, Jackson Heights, Flushing and Glen Oaks. To Do in Astoria, Queens I’ll start with things to do in Astoria, which is where we stayed during our trip, and move east from there. Queens It’s probably not surprising that New York has food tours out the wazoo, and Queens is no exception.
Thankfully, a quick search of the Grand Canyon NPS website gave me the most valuable piece of information for our trip – over 90% of park visitors turn left when they go through the Grand Canyon south rim entrance, and head straight to the visitor center. Day 1: Afternoon check-in at Red Feather Lodge Evening helicopter tour with Papillon – 1.5 hours, including drive time Dinner at Big E Steakhouse and Saloon Day 2: Breakfast at RP’s Stage Stop, and boxed lunches to go – 30 minutes Drive to Desert View – 45 minutes Desert View Watchtower – 30 minutes (longer if you stay to see a cultural demonstrator) Navajo and Lipan Trail to Shoshone Point (including picnic lunch at the rim) – 2 hours Activity on Your Own – 1-2 hours (recommend helicopter tour if it didn’t happen the day before) Dinner at Plaza Bonita Day 3: Breakfast at RP’s, and boxed lunches to go – 30 minutes Drive to South Kaibab Trailhead – 30 minutes Mathers Point Overlook – 30 minutes Activity on Your Own – 1-2 hours (recommend a visitor center program, another hike, or rest at the hotel… the hike to Ooh Aah Point is tiring! )

The most important pro is that it’s much safer for baby to have his own seat, and be strapped into his car seat. During Jack’s first flight experience, even if I hadn’t nursed him at all, he’d have had enough milk to last our entire travel time (provided I hadn’t packed the nipples in our checked bag! No passenger wants to already be seated, only to have my baby-toting ass make them stand while I take FOR-EH-VER trying to get my carry-on into an overhead bin while simultaneously holding said baby and then squeezing into my coveted window seat while maneuvering a diaper bag under the seat while still holding the baby.
