Sometimes I get bored discovering new cities on my own, so I played a neat little game with myself. In order to discover Denver, I would circle around the mile high city in search of great coffee! Simply, I just typed in coffee in google maps and routed around the entire city
Unfortunately, the shutdown does affect traveling to some of America's great destinations. Let's start with the national parks - it's funded by the Interior Department of the government
I arrived on a rainy day and they were ever so welcoming and warm as they helped me into my room (a four bedroom female dorm), and showed me all around the place. YHA York, a beautiful lovely Victorian mansion with stunning gardens is located about half a mile from the York Railway Station. From the ancient city center, it was only about a 7-8 minute ride, or if it's a beautiful day, a lovely 15-minute riverside walk. The best part is that this comes along with great amenities, such as a TV Lounge area, great dining selection with a restaurant inside (the food was so perfect for my first rainy day in).
One of the first things you'll notice in York is a HUGE cement wall that looks like it wraps around the entire city! This is Clifford's Tower, a mound originally built by William the Conqueror, and all that currently remains of York Castle. In 1190, there were anti-Semitic riots driving the Jewish community of York to seek refuge in the Royal Castle, where Clifford's Tower now stands. In an attempt to save money, but also relish in York after my amazing day full of history, life, and a lot of architecture.
