Our First Grade Weather Inquiry – Part Five: Green Screen Weather Reports

(We talked about how we wanted to use the entire page so that it really would look like we were standing outside presenting our weather report.) I set up a report station and during our guided reading rotations my students got to work writing their weather reports. That night students collected items that they wanted to wear for their weather report (that showcased their weather) and I emailed parents to remind them to have students bring them in for our presentations! The next day, my students were SO excited to come to school dressed in their weather report clothing and to see our green screen hanging!

Our First Grade Weather Inquiry – Part Four: Extreme Weather

I’m back to share with you the extreme weather portion of our three week weather inquiry. My students really were interested in understanding more about tornadoes so during guided reading, we researched them and really started to understand the different kinds of tornadoes and what characteristics they all have. I have guided weather readers and a collection of books on tornadoes that really helped us during this guided research. Studying tornadoes was a ton of fun and was definitely a favorite type of weather for my students.

I set up a tray for each of my students that included an “adult” feather, a “baby” feather, a Q-tip, an eye dropper, a scoop of Vaseline, and a little bowl of water. I showed them how to coat baby duck with Vaseline using their Q-tip and instructed them to drop water on their duck once she was coated with oil!

Letting Young Learners Investigate The Question: How Does The Setting Influence A Story?

The setting IS important because if the setting in this story hadn’t been the ocean it couldn’t be the magic FISH!
