Commander Spotlight: Phyrexian Splicer

I couldn’t quite fathom treating Magic entirely like an obligation or a serious enterprise, and while I certainly give some of them credit for being able to do so, I’m not sure most people would actually like being one of the illustrious few who manage to make a living playing in high end Magic tournaments. As I mentioned way back in my EDH deck construction series, Assembling the Dragon Engine, when making decks I always add at least one oddball card that I’ve always wanted to have in a deck but have never been able to for one reason or another – even if newer or better alternatives exist. Certain cards resonate with you as a player, and I decided long ago in my deck construction habits that I wasn’t going to forever brush those aside. When the advent of EDH appeared, it became one of dozens of cards I wanted to find a use for someday but for reasons of theme, space, or, yes, practicality, it wasn’t until last summer that I finally was able to provide it a home in a new deck – even though it meant forgoing a more powerful artifact in the 99 that arguably could have been equally useful.

Commander Spotlight: Quicksilver Gargantuan

Very few games have had the luxury of an active lifespan that stretches into the decades, and even fewer of them have been able to keep that momentum going by continuing to release expansion after expansion of readily consumed material. While board games like Dominion, Smash Up, Munchkin, Zombies!!!, and numerous minis tables have certainly made valiant efforts to keeping the core game on the forefront of people’s minds by generating new material, few can compete with the relentless stream of new content that Magic: the Gathering has released over its tenure

Both Local and Casual games also provide players the option of using different player boards than their opponents, further adding to the app’s depth of replayability. Casual mode allows players to send game requests to friends and play online together, while Ranked mode lets you to play online against random opponents. The board layout is drastically different from that of the physical game, but running through the tutorial can help lost players quickly understand the new layout. While parts of the board can feel cluttered – despite a complete layout overhaul from the board game – the multiple avenues for player personalization allow players to interact with the game in the way they find most intuitive and rewarding.
