Want More Women Leaders? Look to the White House

It’s no secret that public relations is a female-dominated industry; according to a 2018 survey in the Public Relations Review, roughly 75 percent of PR jobs are held by women. Myriad articles have been written about how to improve the numbers of women at the top: supplying mentorship opportunities, crafting a pipeline for female leaders; providing fair and equal pay and benefits; and creating an environment that encourages women to strive for leadership. And yet—these women have all been chosen for the value, skill and nuance they will bring to the White House Communications Team, which I posit may be the highest of all levels when it comes to PR. n’t simply pay lip-service to issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion; that change begins only when those with diverse viewpoints have more than a titular seat at the table, and are intimately involved in decision making.

Maintaining Employee Morale Through the Pandemic

In a previous blog, I even shared several tips on how to maintain company culture during this pandemic, but there has been a significant shift in the narrative for communicators. Now that months have passed and we continue to navigate new obstacles, these messages have shifted focus from company culture to boosting employee morale. The reality of what is happening all over the world has changed the way companies try to fight off employee disenchantment and burnout. If you or someone you know is feeling unmotivated, try to remain calm, prioritize communication and remember that we are all connected in some way as we traverse through this shared experience.

What Our Leaders—Past and Present—Can Teach Us About Communicating

The Presidency of the United States is the Highest Office in the Land and with a new administration poised to begin in January, we’re going to take a look back at presidents past—and the current president-elect—for some best practices on how leaders can be effective communicators. In an address on Nov. 9, Biden clearly laid out a plan of action that will take effect as soon as he takes office, which includes a national mask mandate, national testing and an increase in personal protective equipment. What’s more, he clearly illustrated how the public can take part in fighting the disease: “now we’re called to do the same thing that generations of proud Americans have done when faced with a crisis throughout our history: rise above our differences to defend the strength and the vitality of our nation. This should be the mindset of all good leaders; they forego the urge to point fingers or lay blame elsewhere and take responsibility for issues that happen on their watch, and work to ensure whatever happened doesn’t happen again.

Communications on Election Day: What’s the Best Approach

It’s nearly impossible to read the news or go on social media without seeing stories about the candidates or posts encouraging you to vote. Media relations professionals: You’ve been navigating one of the toughest news cycles, with the media consumed by election and pandemic coverage most of this year. Not only could your post be missed completely by people who are out voting, but it could also receive negative comments from people thinking you are tone deaf. Is this post so essential that it cannot wait one more day to post?” Internal communications professionals:
