Someone Should Have Told Me

Book review of “Someone Should Have Told Me”, a book for parents to read and discuss with their young children, about being exposed to scary, weird stuff online by Holly-ann Martin from Safe 4 Kids. At the back of the book are instructions on how to use the book, and some background about what to look out for, and how to deal with a situation should you discover your child has seen pornography or has had contact with a stranger online. They think just because they are in their home that they are safe and unfortunately parents don’t know how to talk with children about online grooming and other tactics that people use to gain children’s trust. I think often parents themselves don’t know the issues online and don’t realise the dangers that are at their child

TikTok Fined 5.7 Million Dollars

After this fine and ruling, TikTok will now ask U.S users to verify their age as being over 13+ or redirect underage U.S users to a platform that has been limited for underage users. Some parents are confused about the 13+ age rating on apps like TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. For parents and users, the 13+ age rating is a good indicator that the platform may have explicit adult content and the ability for online interactions with strangers. Some parents may view the suggested 13+ rating as a similar rating to a PG rating where there may be a lesser exposure to adult content, and therefore suitable for younger children with some supervision.

Is TikTok Safe For Kids?

After a merger between musical.ly and TikTok, all previous users of musical.ly are now users of TikTok. TikTok includes a lot of prank and comedy videos and challenge style videos, where you make a video that fits a theme, i.e. #10yearchallenge or #wrapbattle Users of TikTok can make videos by creating an account and using the creator tools to film their video and add special effects. On The App: There is also a new screentime limit setting to help users limit their time on the app. The app is rated 16+ by Commonsense Media, although the app is rated on iTunes at 13+ I would agree with Commonsense Media’s assessment of 16+ preferably 13+ minimum depending on the maturity of the teen.

Safer Internet Day 2019

Safer Internet Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the safe and positive use of digital technology, and to explore the role we can all play in creating a better and safer internet in our community. Coordinated by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner in Australia and celebrated in over 130 countries, this year’s Safer Internet Day theme is: ‘Together for a better internet’. We are encouraging all Australians to collaborate with their communities and support each other in developing the critical skills required to successfully navigate the online world. These skills take time to develop but they can help us in all areas of life — online and off.
