This pattern at its worst can lead not only to chronic disease (the stress in our systems that keep us striving for that approval isn’t great for our physiological functioning) but – when the validation dries up – or we find ourselves in a situation where those around us don’t automatically sense our desperate need for approval – In so many of those conversations I have with women, I gently draw their attention again and again to what is actually happening in their experience, versus all the things they feel should be happening in their experience. And I decided to be vulnerable with myself – to feel the hurts of where I hadn’t been seen before, to acknowledge the suffering in my life, and heal some BIG wounds around my body and sex and to foster the deep emotional intimacy with self that I was seeking in him. The more we feel what we feel and express it in the moment, the more connected to ourselves and our essence we become, the more confident we are at building that life that reflects our true selves, and attracting like minded souls who see and celebrate us exactly as we are.
Specifically, I’ve been contemplating how to find more purpose in life, motherhood and work, the feminine way. A feminine leadership approach would argue that all of life can be purposeful – from the way we interact in our relationships, to the kids that we raise or choose not to, to the work that we do, to the art we create, to the very existence that we carve out according to our values. In the meantime, after I return from Bali, I’m running a five week online women’s circle for women looking to explore purpose and career and learn more about some of the feminine leadership qualities above. I’ll be removing those who haven’t opened one of the last five emails from my list as soon as I’m back, to create energetic space in my business and life for me to evolve and reclaim more of who I am, so I can help you do the same.
I once heard someone say that no matter how much body/self love work you do, it all goes to shit when you walk out your front door and are bombarded by context – e.g. a world that body shames and sexualizes women at every possible opportunity. In the past 4-5 years, I’ve come to understand my relationship with food and my body in a whole different light. As I’ve done this work, I’ve felt more comfortable buying clothes that feel ‘me’ and acknowledging that no-one except myself is worried about my belly (babe – no-one is looking at your belly, OK? ). As I’ve moved beyond the superficial and gained an understanding of how my body works and what makes her thrive, I’ve come to truly appreciate the wisdom contained within her.
