In 7th grade, I went to a sports camp in Texas for a week. He always said that all parents love their kids, but that he liked his 3 better than he liked most other people. When I picked mine up this week from soccer camp, he was so tired he actually asked for lunch and a nap. Thanks Dad for the lessons in showing up and being wholly in one place at a time and thank you soccer camp for one wiped out little boy who would never admit he needs his mom, until he’s too tired to be able to speak anything but the truth.
It was from a business associate of Dad’s. He described how Dad loved him well throughout the years, more than just a business colleague, but as a friend. And I am so humbled that my husband took my father’s lead, and is creating a fatherhood legacy of his own. It’s how he would want to be remembered and how I want those I love to remember me.
I can’t be sure how old I was at the time or how many times we actually had this debate. It’s not that I don’t want to buy you everything you want, but that teaches you nothing. When there is something you really want and are willing to sweat for it, that’s how you know it’s important. At thirty something years old, I’ve stopped counting the number of times my father’s ramblings have turned into divine wisdom in my life.
