Ivana worked with her mother, Alica Frühwaldová, to write the story of Alica’s parents, Edith Mittelmann & Oskar Berger. I Lost chronicles Edith & Oskar’s experiences as Jews living in Slovakia during the Second World War. The couple met just as the war began in 1939, lost their families to the death camps, and narrowly escaped themselves by living through the winter of 1944-1945 in a bunker built into the mountains around their village. In working to tell their story, Ivana & her mother shared a journey of their own, filled with moments that one might call the universe intervening to ensure this book came to life to tell the stories of so many.
