Advanced Forecasting: Switching to Customer-Centric

A multi-billion-dollar speciality retailer marketed to consumers using primarily traffic-driving coupons (e.g. “20% Off Any One Regular Price Item”). This made it difficult to forecast promotions effectively and the client turned to a team of data scientists to get an accurate picture of which coupons would work. The client had several different coupons consumers could use on any given week, including: * 20%, 30%, or 40% off one regular priced item * 30% off all items within a department It became increasingly difficult for the client to forecast with all the variations of these promotions in play because the client still used traditional econometric methods. The team looked at the entire customer database and predicted the likelihood any individual would come to a given store, in a given week, given the coupon that’s offered.

1:1 Personalization: Getting the Message Right

The client needed guidance on who to target, which marketing channel to choose, which messages to send, and most importantly – what time to send it. With this information now in-hand, the data scientists partnered with the client’s Marketing Department to create messages that would entice customers to come to the client’s QSR, focusing on Workday Lunch and Workday Happy Hour. They utilized the following channels: As a result, the cross-functional team derived the optimal day and time a customer should receive a “join us for lunch” email. The tools and techniques for delivering the right message to the right customer at the right time and picking a clear channel are critical to changing behavior.
