Last year was a year like no other – between the pandemic, the closing out of Brexit and the drama filed US elections, it was definitely a year that will go down in the history books. One way this event affected the world was by putting a spotlight on corporations and the actions they take to uplift their ethnic minority employees as well as their employees of other marginalized demographics. Social media and news outlets were ablaze with statistics on how diverse companies actually were: it was revealed that Apple’s senior executives were 70% white men, Less than 40% of Facebook’s employees were female, and Google had a diversity issue with both women and ethnic minorities. As we are in the first Black History Month following the surge of the Black Lives Matter movement, an important way that many companies should be making an effective change is through implementing a diversity and inclusion program.

While nothing compares to face time with clients, analysts and journalists, coffees and happy hours with peers and running from meeting room to meeting room until your feet are sore, our firm is finding that virtual events can be just as exciting and productive. Every organization has their key list of reliable, friendly journalists and analysts who are consistent supporters of their news and product updates — and have attended previous years’ user events and/or met up with them at larger industry events for their yearly face-to-face briefings. If these reporters were willing to fly out to attend a user conference or set aside valuable time during a chaotic onsite event, they will very likely be open to listening to keynotes, product roadmap sessions and panels on a laptop screen — even with the laborious two-minute commute from the bedroom to their desk. When setting up briefings at both types of virtual events, offer an array of spokespeople where possible and what they can specifically cover, taking special care to highlight your top suggestions based on the contact’s reporting history and interests.
