It is not unusual for a client to have a particularly striking piece of art—a painting, a sculpture, tapestry or pottery—that becomes for me a source of inspiration when I am creating an interior design for the home. If the client owns a particularly striking piece of art, I often ask them why they chose it. An interior design firm in Sophia, Bulgaria designed the room shown above based upon inspiration from the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. It always amazes me when I find that a client’s home is filled with contractor-grade light fixtures that obviously date to when the home was first built. There is also a greater emphasis on shades, with some new table lamps sporting short bases with oversized shades. Recessed lighting with high-end trim gives a clean uncluttered look to your ceiling, but this kind of ceiling light must be placed carefully for maximum effectiveness. Above all else, when a la carte DESIGN has finished its work for a client, I want the client to experience a sense of comfort in their re-designed home. Often, clients associate comfort with improvements in the way the spaces in their home work. Gardeners often are happiest if their home includes spaces for plants, and windows that allow them to view the outdoor landscaping that they love. My job is to learn what makes each client comfortable—and what would make their home more comfortable than it is before I begin my work.
