>If you’ve ever driven past Kaukiki Farm in Longbranch, you are probably familiar with Lance. And then one day, my friend Janice let me go into the field with Lance and Tex Lance is now learning how to be a vaulting horse with the Harbor View Vaulters, and I got to watch an hour’s worth of practice. Lori Robison, who along with her husband Ed owns Four Winds Riding Center, is training Lance to canter in a neat circle -without stopping – while these incredible athletes jump onto his back and do fluid gymnastic moves and manage to make it look easy and graceful.
She improved as the day went on, performing beautifully in front of the large afternoon throng, when bringing the lambs and pets up from the big front hay field. We talked sheep and beef, watersheds and beavers, trout and bass, best ways to destroy blackberries, lambs and hay. We talked about lamb stew, halibut with a Dijon mustard, butter, garlic cilantro sauce and Panko crust; short ribs slow cooked with lemon and capers; Filet Mignon flavor from grass vs. grain, farm fresh eggs and bone in lamb chops covered in an Asian pear, mint, kiwi salsa. We walked the fields and saw Teddy the Scottish Highlander month old fuzz ball calf, the clearing nearly ready for seeding, the back, hay field with it
Lance is that beautiful bright bay idolized by a hundred Budweiser commercials but his smell is absolutely sheer essence of all things horses should be. I can stand for long minutes, my nose buried in that coat just breathing in the warm strength, peace settling across tight shoulders. We cleaned the automatic waterers, and lassoed the giant guardian dog in training, Razor, and ambled back toward the house. Razor is a stunning Anatolian Shepherd mix, 18 months of zealous energy and way too playful with the sheep.
Kaukiki’s web site is still being constructed. In the mean time, you can sign up for emails letting you know of special events and order dates – look at the bottom of the page for the sign up form.
