Nian: A Chinese New Year Dragon

As Chinese New Year (or Lunar New Year) approached last year I wanted to share some of the experiences that we had with Bug. The story concentrates on a small nondescript village that suffers from annual attacks from a Nian dragon. Mei finds through luck that the Nian hates loud noises and the color red. This reimagined version of the Nian story does an excellent job of staying true to the basic tale while adding in small bits that makes the story more relatable.

Book Review: Maybe Something Beautiful

We cleaned the graffiti off our neighborhood little library (who does that?!), reorganized the books, and Bug passed out homemade treats to people on the way to and from school. It’s a bit daunting but books like Maybe Something Beautiful offer the ever-needed encouragement that keeps us going. López embraces a mixed media expression through all the book that gives it an extra bit of depth. It’s engaging and takes readers along on the journey with the neighborhood, as the book transforms into an expression of color and hope.

Book Review: Strictly No Elephants

The two initial characters are a boy and his small elephant who endeavor to attend a Pet Club meeting only to be met with a sign stating: “ The true harmonious relationship that the original characters have is easily seen in the pictures, as they carry each other over sidewalk cracks, hold umbrellas for one another, and share in emotions. Those emotions are easily understood too as Yoo uses a monochromatic blue palette for an entire scene to indicate the character’s feelings. This allows readers to find connections later on in the story and provides an added interest for very young readers.

What Can a Citizen Do?

As we come back from our President’s Day vacation, I find myself thinking about more than a day off, this day is about people who decided how to lead millions. They’re inclusive and encouraging in how as citizens of a country, a town, or even the world we should stay informed, be kind, receptive, and help build the world we want to live in. Shawn Harris, Eggers’ partner-in-crime from Her Right Foot, delivers again with all inclusive cast of characters. I love how Bug wasn’t sure if some characters were male or female and how we were able to have a discussion about how it doesn’t really matter.
