You can compare, if you like, the exterior photos (no interiors) captured in the morning vs the evening. The renovated part of the building faces the west and this typically means morning may not be the best time to shoot. The morning photos above are okay, but I couldn’t live with them on their own. After scouting the building in the morning, I felt very excited to be back at the right time of day!
I had the pleasure of photographing the newly renovated 2nd floor interior of the North Campus Building at Western University for Nicholson Sheffield Architects. The 2nd floor was full of light, openness, and pops of colour (something the 3rd floor was lacking from what I recall). Some of the done was to bring a bit of organization as things were still a bit chaotic, but it was also a way to hide some distracting cables instead of relying on Photoshop to remove them. For spaces like this, sometimes you’ve really gotta hustle and try to capture it before it is opened up to everyone at Western University.
In this post, I’m trying to make the case for you to know the best time to schedule photography for your architectural projects in advance, if possible. Hey, that leads me to the major struggle with having a really short time to shoot a project or shoot at a specific time of the year. Schedule photography for your projects in advance and you’ll find a better price, availability, and a better opportunity to plan everything out. To wrap this up, the best time to schedule photography for projects you’ve been involved in is as soon as possible.
I’m fresh off an architectural shoot where I was photographing the Victoria Hospital Heating Plant at sunrise. Going out at sunrise was the coolest temperature I saw all day and yet the conditions around the heating plant were crazy for this forgetful London architectural photographer. Any photographer chasing light at sunrise or sunset will deal with them, but I’m just speaking from my position. It’s something I’m getting right away so that I’m always prepared for locations conditions like I just experienced.
