History nerds road tripping the world.
London is a large and sprawling place so don’t expect to see all of these sights within a half day walking tour, it will take some tube hopping and also a couple of days at least if you want to make the most of the place. Not far from the Tower of London and Tower Bridge is a gorgeously cute area called Leadenhall Market. There’s a viewing balcony outside where you can get the most wonderful views of the city with the Tower of London to the left, The Shard to the front and all the way to Westminster and the London Eye to the right I’ve written about my love of Greenwich a number of times and I do really think that if you’re in London for more than a couple of days then a visit to the borough is a must.
then I suggest taking a look at The Angel Hotel which is situated in the centre of town, right next to the Abbey of St Edmunds. The hotel has everything that you’d need for a short break to the town and puts you right in the centre of everything you might want to do whether that’s taking in the amazing religious history of the area, sampling the ale made in the town on the ale trail or just exploring the gorgeous streets. You’re also getting everything you need with an amazing restaurant on site, a bar and of course the rooms which I’ll We went to Bury St Edmunds as a couple and it’s a great place for a romantic stay.
1020 was the year that the land around what we know now as Bury St Edmunds was dedicated to the Benedictine Monks to preserve and protect the shrine of St Edmund the Martyr. To go back a little earlier, St Edmund was King of East Anglia (the area of England that Bury St Edmunds and the region of Suffolk is in) in the mid 800s AD. Bury St Edmunds did play a big part in the history of it though and it is rightly proud of the links to this historic time. 2020 is a big year for the Abbey at Bury St Edmunds because it marks 1000 years since the land was given to the Benedictine Monks in order for them to protect the shrine of King Edmund.
One of the big attractions to the town of Bury St Edmunds is its history and nowhere is this more apparent than the Abbey Gardens. The main museum in Bury St Edmunds is the Moyses Hall Museum and although I don’t really like to use the overused phrase of ‘hidden gem’ There is history to be learned from the monastic past (and if you want to know more about the Abbey and that history I’d definitely suggest heading there to learn more – the museum staff are also incredibly friendly and happy to answer questions) and also from the post dissolution era too with some especially interesting stories of crime and punishment in the area. Of course, being a market town, Bury St Edmunds has a raft of lovely shops to while your time away looking around!
