If you’re used to hunting pressured turkeys, you’ve probably failed more than you’ve succeeded. Here are some turkey hunting tips to learn from a failed turkey hunt, and how they might help you on your next swing and a miss. No matter which turkey hunting tactics Michael and Mason threw at the turkeys, it just didn’t pan out for them. It’s important to get loud when it’s windy or you’re hunting in thickly wooded areas to make sure the sound carries.
In the video below, you’ll see some amazing turkey hunting luck (and some not so good luck) as Michael Waddell, David Blanton, and Phillip Culpepper all have an incredible experience with Merriam’s turkeys. Gobblers – especially highly pressured turkeys – seem to be pretty reluctant to hop a fence, cross a ditch, or navigate any other obstacle without a good reason. The biggest lesson from this hunt is probably to still pursue turkeys on the other side of a fence, but position yourself close enough to take the shot if they decide not to cross it. In this case, they located a group of toms and hens, which can be a tough hunting situation because it’s hard to call a gobbler away from a hen.
With all that space, a hunter could load down the Strap Vest 2.0 with every piece of turkey gear they have, but Michael keeps only the items critical for success. The turkey hunting vest Michael is showing in this video is the new signature Series Strap Vest 2.0 from Ol’ Tom. The vest comes loaded with Michael’s Remington 11-87 features a 21-inch barrel, custom leather strap, and an Indian Creek .665 turkey extended choke tube. Michael uses a homemade strutter decoy and occasionally a hen and jake decoy that he stuffs in the back pouch of the vest.
