With so many of us home and unable to travel at the moment, we thought it would be nice to bring a bit of the magic of travel (and one of our favorite national parks!) So we asked Trip Leader Russell Grange to take us on a "Bite-Sized Backroads Trip" to California's epic Yosemite National Park and share some behind the scenes info, fascinating trivia and truly spectacular footage of one of America's greatest national treasures. Enjoy this first of many "Bite-Sized" trips that we'll be bringing to you soon. Comment below and tell us where you want to go next!
Like everyone else in California and so many others worldwide, we are sheltering in place and learning to adapt to new realities that would have seemed hard to believe just a short time ago. From the Berkeley office staff working at our kitchen tables to the worldwide Backroads community of travelers and Trip Leaders, we're all experiencing an unprecedented time of limited mobility. From neighborhood singalongs in the streets of Italy to 80th birthday celebrations held on opposite sides of apartment windows in Spain, it's been beautiful to see people pulling together in unexpected ways. Of course, we're still here, and happy to answer questions about any future travel plans or help you decide which adventure will be first on your list once this is over.
According to U. S. News & World Report, about 80% of New Year's Resolutioners will lose their resolve by mid-February. With "risk" in the back of my mind, I left my job in marketing and started working for Backroads, where I learned new skills, met incredible people, and traveled to places I'd never been. If you're struggling with your resolution, or just looking for a new challenge, I encourage you to choose a word. January 1 not only ushered in a new year, but a new decade (!), and I can't think of a better time to choose "journey.
Instead of asking your fellow travelers to pose while saying "cheese", try to make photos on the fly when people are engaged in activity or having a good time. The goal with candid photos is to capture the true essence of a trip, and it's often these candid moments that you will be most proud to have captured. Midday can be a very challenging time of day to take good photos of people due to the high-contrast light but one way to work around this limitation is to fill in the shadows with fill-flash. One piece of advice is to compose the photo like you would a regular landscape photo then wait for someone to appear within the frame.
