It's about a 4 hour drive from Denver and 3 ½ hours from Aspen, so tourists and out-of-staters often miss seeing it. But there are also conifer and aspen-filled mountains, hiking trails to alpine lakes, and excellent night sky and nocturnal wildlife viewing. My boyfriend is (or was, if you're reading this after November 2018) a seasonal park ranger at Great Sand Dunes, and I got to visit him here for 10 days in September! I hope these photos and tips from my time visiting Great Sand Dunes National Park will inspire a fun trip!

Apple Hill is home to over 50 local family farms, ranches, orchards, pumpkin patches, Christmas tree farms, and wineries — mainly spread throughout the town of Camino. The second the Northern Californian air gets a little bit colder, I start planning my fall day trip to Apple Hill! Many visitors pack a cooler of food they can eat between all the Apple Hill fall treats (or on the ride home at the end of the day). I've seen an insanely long line of stopped traffic, all trying to inch closer to the main road of farms on a busy October weekend.
*snicker* If you're planning on swimming, snorkeling, diving, or anything else in the ocean (or even rivers), you should be using reef-safe sunscreens. In fact, beautiful destinations like Hawaii are beginning to ban sunscreens that aren't reef-safe. These banned sunscreens contain harmful chemicals, like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, that cause coral bleaching and can disrupt coral reproduction, while damaging their DNA. Many of these reef-safe sunscreens come in active, sport, daily use, and babies/kids, and some even have travel carry-on sizes available as well!
