Taking a costuming class

Also, I haven’t found a lot of the new pattern designs out there that interesting. Although I’ve worked as a costumer at the local theater and have done some film stuff way back when, I never took an actual class on costume design, which is so different than my major of fashion design was. A couple of the girls in the class had no experience sewing, so it’s been kind of fun watching them develop this new passion. Our next project was to dye and then hand paint a silk scarf with Procion fiber reactive dyes, using a pre 20th century garment as our inspiration.

Vogue 9015 silk nightie

It feels so good to sleep in a pretty silk nightgown. I paid five dollars for this pattern on sale, Vogue 9015, and I had bought the silk for five dollars a yard. The trim I’ve had in my stash for years so this silk nightgown was made for fifteen dollars. Even If I paid full retail for the silk, it would still be much less than the last silk nightie I saw in a boutique for one hundred twenty dollars.

Ruffle sleeve blouse Simplicity 8602

The pattern is Simplicity 8602 and the fabric is a rayon retro print from Joel Dewberry. I made the longer version of the pattern because the last time I made the short view it was a little too short. We worked on her design and started to finally get somewhere after the second muslin, but she was then invited to a really fun party, so she left poor old me in my sewing room for greener pastures. But it was really nice spending time in the work room with my now grown up daughter, and I was so glad that one of my kids has finally been bitten by the sewing bug!

Sewing through the blues

I’m still grieving over my dad’s death, and yes, I felt like not only a deer caught in the headlights, but one who had been hit by that car. But I’m making a point to go down to the sewing garage, which I had to completely unpack since we had moved all my sewing things to the new house. I hadn’t sewn for three months and since all my favorite hand made clothes were stolen on the last day of our trip, it felt good to have something new to wear that I had made. I find the solitude and quietness of being alone in my sewing room hand sewing white church garments very comforting.
