In 1641, a man named Willem Kieft was sent by the board of directors of the Dutch West India Company to serve as the Director General of the New Amsterdam colony. Each trading outpost had a Director General, and since the company’s headquarters in Amsterdam was so far away, the Dutch West India Company relied on the good judgement and strong leadership of their Director Generals no matter where in the world they served. In New Amsterdam, Willem Kieft was in charge of the Dutch West India Company’s fort, trading post, towns, and farms. The council members all came from New Amsterdam, but not everyone in the community was represented – there were company employees, plantation owners, ship owners, tavern owners, but no women, slaves, Native Americans, or children.

I have worked with children of all ages in Montessori schools, led after-school art programs in Brooklyn, and taught adults at the School of Fine Arts in Puerto Rico This studio, with enormous windows and ample natural light, can perhaps be considered the eyes of the building – a great start for a visual arts class. I have a combined BFA from the School of Fine Arts of Puerto Rico and The School of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, as well as an MFA from Brooklyn College in New York. I have attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture Residency as well as the Mass Moca studio residency.

Lower School students’ work in Social Studies is the starting point for project-based learning, helps to form classroom culture as students learn to respect and admire other people and places, and serves as an integration point for other subjects. Second Grade is the first time that students “move through time”, incorporating history into their social studies work, so solidifying their understanding of the current landscape is an integral part in understanding how our city has grown and changed. The role of a school psychologist is to support students in their social-emotional learning to ensure that they can be successful at school. My experiences prior to joining the team at Northside include working at other independent schools in New York City with elementary, middle and high school students. I am very much looking forward to collaborating with our teachers and the rest of the Student Support Team (SST) in order to ensure a positive and successful year for all of our students.
