The Peach Belt Conference (PBC) is an NCAA Division II league comprised of 14 member institutions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
It wasn’t until my junior year that I decided to run cross country and in those moments I had no idea it would led me to where I am today. Choosing to run cross country gave me the opportunity to run collegiality at the University of South Carolina Aiken. For the last three years I’ve been on the cross country team and I’ve enjoyed every bit of it. I couldn’t have been more happy with my decision because it has led me to an awesome opportunity to work with the Peach Belt Conference.
I graduated from USCA as a communications major and plan to use my degree to work as a broadcaster, journalist, or administrator in the field of sports. As the PBC intern I was able to gain both office and field experience while working in sports. Another interesting aspect about working with the PBC has been meeting various personnel in the athletic field like athletic directors, media, coaches and other interns who represent athletic organizations. As an intern, I would say my favorite experience was working with the PBC championships for both baseball and basketball.
The groups were given tasks to focus on such as, fundraising, community service, general needs, social who help with documenting event, and lastly, the events committee who assist with decorating, foods and games. Lots of yummy treats and goodies such as Halloween decorated cookies, a delicious caramel dip for apple slices smothered in a selection on peanuts, M&M’s, chocolate sprinkles and multicolored candy sprinkles. There were also fun games such as bobbing for apples, guess what’s inside the box and guess how many pennies are inside the jar. Athletes, coaches, students, family and friends were all invited to dress up in their best Halloween costume for; you guessed it, a traditional costume contest!
I consume coffee, everyday within about 5 minutes of waking up, I have to have a cup before my morning cross country practice, and then one after practice during breakfast. Sometimes I take an espresso shot before I go to class, and in the afternoon if I had a long day I get a nice latte from the Kookaburra which is a local coffee shop downtown where I can just walk in and get my “usual”. My daily fitness is fueled by coffee, since being on the cross country team (we just claimed our first conference title, shout out to Brian Beil) fitness is a major key to being an efficient runner. Due to daily intense workouts, weights, pool sessions, and our recovery runs, I am fueled by coffee.
