One of the most difficult questions I get in my Facebook Group is “How can I keep my students engaged in their centers while working independently?” This one is a little tricky, because it cannot be answered with just one suggestion. Having the 100% engagement can be achieved, but only with the perfect mix of classroom management, culture, and strategy
I always explain to my students that this is something we do for one minute each day, and it’s going to help us read with more speed and accuracy. The second step would be to let your students know which partner goes first and which partner will be the “coach. My students know what I expect, because we partner read every day. The other wonderful thing about having these skills and activities written down is that it’s easier to go into your grade book at the end of the week and record a grade for your students! Then, I laminate and cut my title page, and glue it to the front of the file folder. Next, I laminate and cut my directions sheet and glue it to the left side of the inside of the file folder.
