Mi Casa Resource Center is a 501c3 nonprofit organization in Denver, Colorado, committed to advancing family prosperity.
Our business is focused on creating a new canvas for decorative concrete as a medium for commercial construction, so I knew it would be important to have the proper certifications to bid on larger projects. Immediately after registering my business, I began the paperwork and filing for Small Business Enterprise (SBE), Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE), Minority/Women Business Enterprise (M/WBE) and Emerging Business Enterprise (EBE) certifications with the City and County of Denver. As part of our business strategy to build our capacity, I met with a Mi Casa Business Consultant again in November 2018 to celebrate the victories of the past year and dive into a SWOT analysis in order to continue the momentum. Since my meeting with Mi Casa in November I explored the 8a Business Development program through the U. S. Small Business Administration and have become self-certified through the Women Owned Small Business (WOSB) and Economically Disadvantaged Women Owned Small Business (EDWOSB) programs.
Anyone who lives in Denver can tell you that gentrification is in full swing in neighborhoods across the city and this report focuses on the involuntary displacement taking place, especially among minority populations, as a result of that gentrification. When Mi Casa moved to this Southwest Denver neighborhood in 2017, “we brought a free legal clinic, job training, small business services and development,” says Lovato. “ And we happen to work with a lot of the populations that are finding themselves pushed out of traditionally low-income neighborhoods or neighborhoods that have a high population of Latinos, refugees, and immigrants. Mi Casa and other community organizations are committed to ensuring that when investment comes into a neighborhood, it builds wealth in the community rather than stripping wealth from the low- and moderate-income families who live there.
Then, last fall, I got an email from the coordinator at the first-time homebuyer assistance program I was enrolled in about the Financial Services Technical Training at Mi Casa Resource Center. I remembered hearing about Mi Casa through my children, who have been involved with Mi Casa’s Youth Development program throughout middle and high school, but I didn’t know much about what else the organization had to offer. I contacted the Career Recruiter, Emily, the next day and signed up to take the TABE test – a test to measure adult education skills – a requirement for enrollment in the Financial Services Training. ” Find out how Mi Casa Resource Center can help connect you with your dream job through our Career Training program.
Do you have a Denver Public School (DPS) student and have questions about the possible teacher strike? On January 22, Denver teachers through the Denver Classroom Teachers Association (DTCA) voted overwhelming to go on strike, advocating higher pay and a fundamental change in their compensation system. Mi Casa’s afterschool program at the Lake Campus will continue to provide programming like normal during the afterschool hours.
